The 2023 program of Regards de l’Oltrarno: Women of the Palace
Oltrarno is the left bank of the Arno River that flows through Florence (i.e., "across the Arno" from Lungarno, which is made up of all the districts bordering the river on the other bank).
Although the city’s historic center is traditionally located on its right bank, in Oltrarno you’ll find monuments, gardens and museums such as the Pitti Palace and Boboli Gardens, the Church of Santo Spirito... This is the area of Florence where fiorentinità still manifests itself, in the narrow streets of the Renaissance spirit still alive and well, and which in recent years has become the refuge of the Florentine or foreign bourgeois-bohemies.
Over the centuries, many remarkable women working in government, the arts, patronage, literature and philanthropy have lived and worked in Oltrarno . From September to December 2023, lectures, tours, original crafts, music, an exhibition and an original catalog of videos and photographs are part of a series of events, organized by The British Institute of Florence, Il Palmerino Cultural Association and Calliope Arts, highlighting past excellence and modern creativity from a female perspective.
